» Zun Zun Egui (UK) (Indie / Experimental / Zouk)
Formed in the libertine and verdant undergrowth of Bristol’s cultural side streets (members Kushal Gaya and Yoshino Shigihara first met at an improv session at notorious DIY cinema The Cube Microplex), Zun Zun Egui started out playing up and down the UK to hardcore and party crowds ready to be let loose by music. They self-released a limited editon CD-R and then, on the back of a snowballing word-of-mouth live reputation, started to be invited to play shows all over the world at festivals, squat cafes, hotel lobbies, art centres and other unlikely spaces. Meanwhile they recorded two white-hot slabs of 1inyl at their Bristol-based studio lair for Blank Tapes.
Always with a desire to connect, ZZE and Qu Junktions cooked up their own colourful club night called “How Come…” in Bristol and had tour mates like The Ex and Sun Araw pull up and play as well as Michachu And The Shapes, Bass Clef, Krar Collective and AJ Holmes. Now Zun Zun Egui have dreamt up their debut album proper, and it’s one to savour. Recorded in the Welsh wilds and produced by bassist Luke Mosse, ‘Katang’, is released on Bella Union/Yep Rock in autumn with singles in advance.
Everything about “Katang”, from its 50 minutes of freerange rock music to the wonderful fifth-world visual feel conjured up by keyboard player/singer Yoshino Shigihara, emits a weird, kinetic and contagious energy that could only have come from these four individuals coalescing as personalities and players, carving out an intuitive musical lexicon that, whilst far removed from rock’s lingua franca, finds its own way to connect on a direct and universal level. Away from the tribal sprawl of modern music culture and what they call “the realm of ideas”, “Katang” finds Zun Zun zoning in on the heart of the matter.
Zun Zun Egui are:
Kushal Gaya – vocals/guitar
Matthew Jones – drums
Luke Mosse – bass
Yoshino Shigihara – keyboards/backing vocals/artwork
» Jean Mikili (Chanson / Zouk / Indie)
.. ...... .. ......Jean Mikili, le sourire éternel .. .... .. ..Né du côté rouille d'une ville jadis princière, j'ai grandi dans son coton synthétique. Mais ça me grattait. .. Longtemps, on m'a appelé Jumbo Jet. J'ai volé. .. I was born on the rusty side of a city once ruled by a prince. Then I grew by its fake coton one. It made me itch. I went to see..... So I came down to the city, tried to learn the story of the man. I travelled my soul and my ears. Bought a guitar and a computer. I wrote an Epitaphe. Then I turned sorrowful, beautiful and happy in Silance. I became a Tom Sweetlove and a Some Tweetlove. I was a Sexcrispies. I took a wig to be Underground Techno with House Dance, Trance Acid and Hardcore. I was called Jumbo Jet for a long while. And I flew. .. I danced under the tropical lines, drank Mezcal and avoided the worm. I went to make a revolution but forgot the keys. I lived happy in an Indian reservation on a island by the Meuse. I went laowhisteling on a hill and came back to soukouss in Matongé. I lived where some scarabs once sang yeah, yeah, yeah... I've loved. .. , I live and more or less work in Brussels. I appreciate the world as a labyrinth and the fools as wisemen. Just like an orange house by the water... I sing the city where the movies are true, the pleasure of flanders flirting, the beauty of an Island, the deads forgiven for their lives and the belief of the strongest. .. I am Jean Mikili. .
