When one of the world’s leading British luxury brands invites a selection of top galleries that blur the lines between collectible design and art - and discreetly hides one of its premium Suvs inside - you know luxury marketing has evolved to a new level. Range Rover has arrived in Knokke-Heist.

It may look and feel like an art gallery, but Scene by Range Rover is in fact a platform for celebrating creative collaboration. With a star-studded lineup of galleries, designers, and collectors - from St. Vincents to Maurice Verbaet and Arno Declercq, and Modern Shapes Gallery - Scene by Range Rover is an all-terrain redefinition of what a gallery can be.

“SCENE by Range Rover is a collaborative model bringing together top galleries in a unique location in Knokke-Heist, initiating dialogue between artists, galleries, and collectors,” says Rorschach creative director Emm. “We’re essentially curating the curators. Over six months, we’re connecting works from a wide range of Belgian and Dutch galleries and collectors into evolving ‘scenes’.”

For example: A standout piece by Vic Gentils or René Guiette - handpicked by renowned collector Maurice Verbaet from his vast post-war Belgian art collection - is placed in dialogue with the Irrational Dozen sofa (composed of massive sheets of red neoprene rubber) by Brian Thoreen, presented by the acclaimed St. Vincents gallery.

“That sounds simpler than it is. These conversations require a mindset from gallerists to want to make those connections - which, let’s be honest, isn’t always easy in an arena with big egos and competing interests in a rapidly changing market.” Still, they have pulled it off. The participating gallerists read like a who’s who of rising stars and established forces.

“I like to imagine it as the design loft of a collector with very eclectic taste,” Emm laughs. “Who parks their Range Rover in the living room next to the iconic ‘Soriana’ three-seater by Italian duo Afra and Tobia Scarpa !” This piece is one of the highlights selected by Jelmar Hufen of H Gallery, a film and advertising director whose gallery caters to a global clientele of the rich and famous. Making their Knokke-Heist debut, Hufen’s curators draw connections between the rich histories of Italian, Brazilian, and Scandinavian design and the new generation of collectible designers.

“Credit Suisse suits call it ‘holistic wealth management’. It always walks the line between emotion and return. Buying with your heart is the number one rule,” says Urs Rohner, chairman of Credit Suisse Group Ag. The concept of “the designer” only emerged in the 1950s. By the early ‘80s, some galleries began offering limited edition pieces - thus launching the market for collectibles. About a decade later, collectible design hit the auction circuit. The ‘design.05’ fair in Miami set the tone from 2005 onward. Today, galleries around the world are treating design as a viable investment vehicle.
